Outdoor School
Overview
Siuslaw Outdoor School is a 30-year tradition of Siuslaw School's sixth grade class. Counselors, classroom teachers, and dozens of adult volunteers create a holistic learning environment in a camp setting south of Florence, Oregon. Five days of age-appropriate physical, mental, and sociological challenges are offered in a group camp setting. During this week away from home and "regular" school, each child learns about the natural environment, the importance of shared tasks, and the meaning of self-reliance within both small and large group settings.
More than just a set of camp skills and songs, Outdoor School provides each child with a sense of belonging and a set of meaningful lifelong memories. The positive effect of these benefits radiates through Siuslaw Middle School and the greater Florence community. For more information about this year’s program phone Ty Perry 997-8241.
Funding
The funding for Outdoor School was cut from the school budget in 2004. The school district, community volunteers and charitable foundations are joining forces to revive this one-week residential program. We ask your assistance in providing all sixth-graders, 8 eighth-grade-helpers and 24 high-school / college-age-counselors with our 2009 program.
