Western Lane Community Foundation grants awarded

Western Lane Community Foundation celebrated thirty-fourth year by awarding a total of $149,883 in grants, scholarships and designated gifts in the Florence-Mapleton area. Scholarships paid in 2008 amounted to $21,663. The distribution from endowment funds for designated non-profit agencies amounted to $59,991. The remaining $68,229 was awarded through the annual granting program . Representatives from the following agencies attended the Rotary lunch on March 18, to receive their checks:

The Boys & Girls Club: $3500 for citizen and leadership development; Community Chorus of Florence: $1,000 for a scholarship; EC Cares Nursery: $2,000 for the parent /child play group; First Book: $1,400 for low income literacy groups; the Florence Area Humane Society: $500 for the spay/neuter program; the Florence Bridge Volunteers in Siuslaw Schools: $5,000 for the outdoor school; the Caring Pregnancy Center: $1,500 for a video library "Life Skills for Teens;" Florence Community PTA: $2,754 for elementary color block carpets; Florence Dance Guild: $1,700 for a dance camp for children, in connection with the Boys & Girls Club; Food Share: $2,000 to buy clay for the Empty Bowls project;

Florence to Yamagata Friendship Association: $2,000 to help send students to our Friendship City; Front Desk-Siuslaw : $2,000 for a feasibility study to help the elderly remain at home; Heceta Head Coastal Conference: $1,000 for marketing ; Helping Hands for the Arts: $4,000 for art education for grades 3–5 ; Lane Community College: $3,000 for medical field scholarships; Mapleton Elementary School, $2,000 for sound equipment; Mapleton Elementary School, $800 for visiting professional artists; Mapleton High School, $750 for computer college credit courses; Mapleton School District, $500 for emergency radio; Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra, $875 for LED music stand lights; Peace Health Counseling Services, $600 for kitchen items for the new apartment complex; Senior Connections and Senior and Disabled Services: $4,350 to provide transportation for the elderly;

Siuslaw Outreach Services: $3,000 for emergency aid and training advocates; Siuslaw Regional Aquatic Center: $500 for the aqua therapy program; SMART reading program: $1,500 for volunteer recruitment and training; Western Lane Ambulance District: $600 for children's safety helmets; Yachats Community Health Clinic: $1,000 to support low cost health services to western Lane County residents; and $20,000 to the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum for its third year of a ten year pledge for its new building.
